MEDIA: "Rancho Raised, UCLA Made"

This past January, the UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center (CSRC) was overjoyed to welcome back to UCLA Osvaldo Gutierrez, professor of chemistry and the CSRC's inaugural Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Faculty Director.

Among his many accomplishments, Gutierrez, now a professor in the UCLA Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry where he earned his PhD, this year was awarded the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government on outstanding scientists and engineers early in their careers.

Recently, Professor Gutierrez penned the short personal essay "Rancho Raised, UCLA Made," in which he shares his journey from being a seven-year-old chivero in Rancho Los Prietos, Guanajuato, Mexico, to his current professional roles at UCLA: scientist, educator, and mentor.
