CSRC Press Publications Win IPPY Awards

Two CSRC Press publications, Judith F. Baca by Anna Indych-López, and the exhibition catalog Laura Aguilar: Show and Tell, won medals in the 2018 Independent Publisher Book Awards (IPPYs) announced April 10.

Judith F. Baca received the silver medal for Multicultural Non-Fiction. The book is volume 11 in the CSRC’s A Ver: Revisioning Art History series, which explores the cultural, aesthetic, and historical contributions of Chicano, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Dominican, and other U.S. Latina/o artists. In this volume, the author explores Baca’s oeuvre, from early murals created with gang members to the creation of the Great Wall to more recently commissioned works. The author assesses what she calls Baca’s “public art of contestation” and discusses how ideas of collaboration and authorship and issues of race, class, and gender have influenced and sustained Baca’s art practice. This is the first comprehensive scholarly monograph on the artist.

Additionally, the exhibition catalog Laura Aguilar: Show and Tell received a gold medal in the category West Pacific: Best Regional Non-Fiction in the Regional and Ebook Awards. Published by the CSRC Press to accompany the recent exhibition at the Vincent Price Art Museum (and now on view at the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum in Miami), the catalog surveys the career of the Chicana photographer who is most widely known for black-and-white nude self-portraits that are frank and self-assertive, yet deeply sensitive and poetic.
