On February 13, we proposed a Faculty Diversity Initiative to UCLA Chancellor Albert Carnesale, followed the next week by a town hall with community members in order to discuss the proposal and the underlying educational issues and challenges facing our increasingly diverse state.

"Today, public education in California is facing one of its biggest challenges as the state government considers severe budget cuts in order to cover a $34.6 billion deficit. These cuts come as student enrollment is increasing, thereby putting more pressure on the educational system and creating a climate that is even more hostile to an equitable sharing of resources."

This month the Chicano Studies Research Center (CSRC) will release two policy briefs on Latinos and education in California. The data -- drawn from the California Department of Education and the U.S. Census -- reveals that Chicanos and other Latinos in the state face shocking disparities in terms of access to quality education.
