Brian E. Herrera presents “On the Presence (and Absence) of Latinxs in US Popular Performance”

Event Date:
Monday, February 27, 2017 -
3:00pm to 5:00pm
Event Location:
CSRC Library - 144 Haines Hall

Why were more Latinx actors nominated for Oscars in the 1950s than any decade before or since? What happens AFTER a “Latin Explosion” in US pop culture? And why do “Latin Explosions" happen every few years or so? To answer these questions, the CSRC welcomes performance historian Dr. Brian Herrera, who will examine in an interactive presentation the presence and absence of Latinx performers and narratives in US popular performance, as discussed in his book Latin Numbers: Playing Latino in Twentieth-Century U.S. Popular Performance (University of Michigan Press, 2015). Herrera will discuss the critical, creative, and historical understanding of the “roles” played by Latinxs on stage and screen beyond familiar zero-sum measures of positive/negative, success/failure or good/bad and toward an appreciation of the enduring impact of Latinxs in US popular performance. Books will be available for purchase at the event.

BRIAN EUGENIO HERRERA is an assistant professor of theater at Princeton University where his work, both academic and artistic, examines the history of gender, sexuality and race within and through US popular performance.

This event is co‐sponsored by the UCLA Center for Performance Studies.
