Who really belongs in the US? Join us as NPR correspondent Aarti Namdev Shahani discusses this question and presents her new book Here We Are: American Dreams, American Nightmares (A Memoir). In the memoir, Shahani uses her family’s immigration story to unpack the deep schism in American culture by which the “deserving” are deified and the “undeserving” demonized—in her family’s case, relentlessly.

Shahani is an award-winning correspondent for NPR in Silicon Valley, and a resounding voice advocating on behalf of our country’s immigrant community.

The 2019-2020 Institute for Research on Labor and Employment (IRLE) colloquia series aims to convene faculty, students, and special guests to discuss multidisciplinary research and policy issues impacting workers and their families today.

This event is organized by the UCLA Institute for Research on Labor and Employment and co-sponsored by the Asian American Studies Center and the Chicano Studies Research Center.
