'TransVisible' Screening Gives Attention to Transgender Advocacy and Research

On Wednesday, January 15, the CSRC was pleased to host a screening of the 2013 documentary Transvisible: Bamby Salcedo's Story. The screening and Q&A was introduced and moderated by Alicia Gaspar de Alba, professor of English, Chicana/o, and women's studies, who also served as the faculty curator of the event. Director Dante Alencastre and Bamby Salcedo were present at the event, which drew over fifty people, several from outside UCLA.

While the film focused on Salcedo's own journey of becoming transgender and being an activist for her community, the transgender Latina immigrant experience has been researched and reported on more broadly by the TransLatin@ Coalition, founded in 2009 to advocate for the rights and needs of transLatin@ immigrants in the U.S. A PDF of its 2013 report, "TransVisible: Transgender Latina Immigrants in U.S. Society," is attached here.
